Postal reform legislation is back on the slow track

National Newspaper Association leaders Matt Paxton, publisher of the News-Gazette in Lexington, VA, and Max Heath, NNA Postal Committee chair, joined NNA Chief Executive Officer Tonda Rush in April for a listening session with House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chair Jason Chaffetz, R-UT. Chaffetz assured NNA that he is proceeding with postal legislation but that it would not necessarily follow the form of the 113th Congress.

Standard Mail Carrier-Route prices drop in second filing

Newspaper mailers still face uncertainty with 2015 postal rates, as the Postal Regulatory Commission has now twice kicked back the U.S. Postal Service request for new rates to go into effect April 26. Because the Postal Service has to provide 45 days’ notice before new rates occur, it would have needed final rates by March 12. But on March 18, the PRC indicated it still wasn’t happy with the proposal for either Periodicals or Standard Mail.

NNA calls for precise measurement of rural mail service

Changes in the U.S. Postal Service’s method of tracking the mail in its system led in March to the National Newspaper Association’s call for more precise measurement of rural mail service.
